What is AVID?
AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a college and career readiness system built to develop student agency and the academic skills students need to be successful in rigorous coursework and beyond.
Purpose of AVID at Monroe
The AVID program targets students in the academic middle to upper middle who are motivated to work hard and would benefit from structured support as they take on more rigorous courses.
Students are scheduled into the AVID Elective, which at our school meets every other day for one Block period (84 minutes). The Elective is the core of AVID at the secondary level, supporting students with organization, study skills, critical thinking, and intentional preparation for college and career pathways.
AVID’s Focus: WICOR
AVID promotes rigor and engagement through WICOR:
Students practice these skills across classes through strategies like collaborative study, focused note taking, and structured academic conversations.
Why AVID?
AVID has decades of success as a college readiness program designed to help students develop the skills needed to be successful after high school. AVID emphasizes writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization, and reading skills while setting high expectations so students can confidently take on academic challenges.
